Tunnel 2018 continues my exploration of the suppressed, altered, and forgotten fragments within historical narratives. This labyrinth consists of transparent polyester sheets, recorded conversations with two interviewees, and videos sourced from daily media. Audiences are invited to use their cellphones' spotlight to explore the space.
The process of making this labyrinth is inspired by the "Great Firewall," a system that blocks online information considered 'dangerous' to the harmony. On the polyester, write down words with a ballpoint pen, then erase the pen's color with chemicals. Only scratches can be seen after this production process under the cellphoe light.
As part of this installation, the audio 'Channel' features recorded conversations with two interviewees. The conversation traces the migration of a family across periods of social and political transformation. The series of videos 'Little Thing' is sourced from the subtle manipulation of media in daily life.
By presenting these unspeakable or censored moments, this project aims to reveal how the repression of thoughts, feelings, opinions, and individual rights can echo across generations and shape the lives of families.
